Japanese Earthquake Quote

I heard one TV anchor talking about the Earthquake in Japan:

"The earthquake in Japan was an 8.9 on the scale - the famous San Francisco quake was a 7.9 - and the scale is exponential, actually more than exponential!"

I wish I could fathom what "more than exponential" would mean.... is that a new dimension of numbers?
